Mailmodo provides the functionality to add conditional logic within steps in a form so that the user is directed to a specific set of questions/steps based on their previous responses.

Let's demonstrate this concept by creating an NPS form, wherein the user will be directed to different sets of questions based on the rating provided by them (in Step 1).

You can also select a 'Simple Form' instead of NPS, then delete the pre-existing question by selecting it  and clicking on the delete button. Once the question has been deleted, add a new question by clicking on the plus + button. Select NPS from the list.

Note: Once a dynamic element such as a form is added, do not forget to edit the HTML version of the same by clicking on the 'Show HTML' button next to the form. This version will be displayed to users whose email clients do not support AMP (ex- Outlook)

If a step containing pre-filled values is skipped as a part of step logic, then the pre-filled value is skipped as a part of step logic

 Once the rating question has been fully configured, add the conditional questions in the succeeding steps. These steps will be selectively displayed to the user based on the ratings given by them.

As an example, let's create 2 different steps (step 2 & 3) after the rating step, with the condition that any user who provides a rating of less than 7 is directed to step 2, and any user who provides a rating of 7 or more is directed to step 3.

 To add a new step to the form, click on the 

  button. Edit/delete the questions in the steps through the process mentioned above.

 Once the steps and the questions have been added, configure the logic of the NPS rating step:

To do this, select the form (block) and click on the gear icon (configure form).

How would you rate your 2024 experience with us? (STEP 1) Less than 7 Then go to Step 2

How would you rate your 2024 experience with us? (STEP 1) More than or equal to 7 Then go to Step 3

If the output is a string, the conditional operators would be Equals and Not Equals. If the output is a numeric value, the conditional operators would be Less than, Less than or equals, Equals, More than or equals, More than and In-between.

 The logic is now configured. Upon clicking

Adding conditional logic within forms in Mailmodo

In this article let us look into the process of adding the mobile default country code. The purpose of having a default country code for phone number is to streamline and simplify the phone number input process for users. By setting a default country code, you can preselect the country code associated with the user's location, making it easier for them to enter their mobile number accurately.

Let's look into the steps of adding a mobile default country code

Create a new template or select a pre-existing template.

To add the phone number field in a form select add question > more > phone number.

 Select the phone number field and choose the settings option, to add the default country code.

 Under the general tab of settings, select a default country code by using the dropdown option.

 Choose the country that you want to put as default and click on save changes.

 Preview the template and send a test email to see how the template will look in the inbox.

You have successfully added the default country code to the phone number field. You can now create and send a campaign using this template. 

How to add a mobile default country code?

In this article, we will see how to add a Phone Number Text Input as a Question Type.

Add a Question >  Click on the three dots icon > Select Phone Number from the options.

The phone number text input option will be added to the form. A user can find their country code from the drop-down list and enter their phone number in the adjacent field.

You can now use the display logic feature to conditionally show/hide questions in a form based on the recipient's previous responses.

For example, the first question of my form is-

Now, there are two cases, the recipient can select India or USA as their answer. In both the cases, different subsequent questions will be shown to the recipient.

 If the email recipient selects India as their response, then this question will be shown to them-

If the email recipient selects USA as their response, then this question will be shown to them-

In this example, the first question i.e Which country do you live in is the 

. The decision question is the independent question the answer to which will determine whether subsequent questions are shown or not.

Where do you live in India and Where do you live in USA are 

. The show/hide questions are dependent questions. They will be show or hidden depending on the recipient's response to the decision question.

A decision question can belong to the following question types-

A show hide question can belong to any of the following question types-

Create a form with all the decision questions and show/hide questions. Learn more about using the editor 

Select the question you want to conditionally show or hide.

You will only be able to configure display logic if a decision question precedes a show/hide question.

First question of a form can never be a show/hide question since no decision question precedes it. The first question will always be shown.

Click on show/hide logic as shown in the screenshot above.

Click on add condition and configure display logic.

a. In the first drop down, select whether you want to show or hide the question if the condition is met. 

b. In the second dropdown, select the decision question (all decision questions preceding the selected question will be visible in the drop down). 

c. In the third dropdown, select the conditional operator. In the case of single select dropdown, radio, thumbs up and single select chip the conditional operators would be 

In case of emoji, NPS and star rating, the conditional operators would be 

Less than, Less than or equals, Equals, More than or equals, More than

d. In the fourth dropdown, select one of the decision question's answer options to complete the condition.

If you have selected Show this question in the first dropdown, then the question will only be shown if the condition is met. Otherwise, the question will be hidden.

If you have selected Hide this question in the first dropdown, then the question will only be hidden if the condition is met. Otherwise, the question will be shown.

Once you have configured the logic click on 

The decision question and show/hide question can belong to different steps in the form. As long as the decision question precedes the show/hide question, display logic will be honored. 

You can use the same decision question for multiple show/hide questions. 

 i.e a show/hide question can be a decision question for another question. For example, in the example mentioned above, if the recipient selects Delhi as their place of residence, then we can ask them another question Where do you live in Delhi? This question will only be shown if they select Delhi as their place of residence (in India), else it will stay hidden. 

Please note that nesting will only work if the show/hide question belongs to one of the following question types- single select dropdown, radio, single select chip, emoji, thumbs up/down, star rating, NPS.

Use display logic along with step logic to configure advanced logic.

Check the preview and send a test email to make sure everything works as expected.

How to conditionally show/hide questions in a form?

Advanced configuration for forms lets you create dynamic forms that add or change questions based on triggers in your website or app. For example, a purchase on your website would trigger an email with form questions related to the product purchased by the user. 

Following is the step-by-step process to use Advanced Configuration for forms in your template: 

 and configure it according to your requirements in the backend.

Once your template is ready, save it and create a 

 Enable the transactional campaign. The trigger emails with the dynamic form will be sent to users following trigger actions on your selected platforms.

How to use ‘Advanced Configuration’ for forms

Whenever you add an AMP element, you should also edit the HTML fallback version. This would make sure your emails would 

look perfect even if AMP emails fails to render for some of your contacts.

To do so, toggle to the fallback version. 

There are specific reasons why AMP failure can happen:

Your sender domain is not approved for AMP emails by Google/Yahoo. 

Your contacts are not using a supported email client like Google/Yahoo. 

Your contacts are using a native email browser like Outlook, Superhuman, Thunderbird, Samsung email etc. 

Your contact's browser is not updated or using Microsoft Edge. 

Your contacts would have disabled dynamic emails in your email. If they enable it back from settings they would be able to receive AMP emails.

You can now send forms with pre-filled answers. When the email recipient opens the email, they will see essential fields like name, age and address already pre-filled, thus helping them complete the form faster.

Form input fields are mapped to contact properties. Valid contact property data must exist for the input field to be pre filled. 

In case of promotional campaigns, contact property value is fetched from contact data you have uploaded to Mailmodo.

In case of transactional campaigns, contact property value is fetched from the API body.

Pre-fill value is only supported for the following types of form input fields-

in emoji, thumbs up, star rating, NPS, date picker and time picker. 

In case of multiple answer options, input field will be pre filled only if contact property value matches one of the answer options. If the contact property value does not match with one of the answer options, then the field will not be pre filled.

In case of single line and multi line text input, the field will always be pre filled with the contact property value.

If a step containing pre-filled values is skipped as a part of step logic, then the pre-filled value will not be exported as a submission.

How to create a template with pre filled forms?

Create a template with a form. Customise the form questions as per your requirement. 

Select the field you want to pre-fill. Click on the gear icon.

Map the field to contact property. Select a contact property to fetch existing contact data. Create a custom key to fetch new data (in case of transactional campaign).

 (single line and multi line)- Navigate to pre fill value. Text input field will be pre-filled with the contact property value.

Answer option will only be pre selected if the contact property value matches one of the answer options. If contact property value does not match any of the answer options, then no answer will be pre selected.

For example, in the screenshot below, if the value of contact property "city" is "Delhi", "Mumbai", "Bangalore" or "Other", then the corresponding answer option will be pre selected. However, if the value of contact property is "Chennai" then no answer option will be pre selected.

Map the input fields with corresponding contact properties. Once done, save the template.

When you click on send test email, a modal will open. All the properties which you mapped to earlier will be visible here. Click on change and enter the value you would like the field to be pre filled with.

How will the template look in email recipient's inbox?

Text input field (single line and multi line) will be pre filled when the recipient opens the email.

In desktop, user needs to click once on the email body for radio, checkbox, drop-down and chip select to pre fill. In mobile, user needs to tap once on the email body for radio, checkbox, drop down and chip select to pre fill. Note that a scroll will not be considered as an interaction.

How to use a template with pre filled forms in promotional campaigns?

Send a  bulk campaign with the template you created.

Add a subject line, pre header text, from name and reply to email. Select the sender email.

 Select the contact list to whom you would like to send the campaign. 

After clicking on next, a modal will open. Ensure that the contact properties you selected earlier are mapped correctly. If you created a custom key, you would need to map it to a contact property here.

Review your campaign. Schedule it for a future date or send it now.

How to use a template with pre filled form in transactional campaigns?

Send a campaign with the template you created. Add details like subject line, pre header text etc. Select external trigger.

 You will have to hit the api endpoint to trigger this campaign. The pre fill contact property value needs to be passed in the "data" object of the API payload. The contact property you selected while creating the template is the JSON key. You need to enter the key value in the payload.

Field will pre fill based on the key value.

Radio, dropdown, chip select and checkbox

- Field will be pre filled if key value matches one of the answer options.

How to use a template with pre filled forms in journey campaigns?

Select the template you created earlier while configuring the send campaign action in journey. 

Once you have created the rest of the journey paths, test your journey.

Enter the email address to which you want to send the test email. All the contact properties used in the template will be visible. Click on change and enter the value you would like the field to be pre filled with.

For text input, the field will be pre filled with whatever value you enter. For fields containing multiple answer options, the pre fill value you enter must match one of the answer options.

The contact property value will be fetched from the contact data uploaded to Mailmodo.

If the contact is enrolled via API, then the contact property value will be fetched from API payload.

How to send a form with pre-filled answers?

You can change the name of the form used in your template. This is useful when you are using multiple forms (in the same template) and/or 

Here is the step-by process for the same.

Go to the template on which you are working. After you are done editing the form, click on Form 

: Button would be clickable only after you have added a form.

A dialogue box will open. Click on the form name

(against the form whose name you want to edit). You will be able to edit the default name of the form (For example adding the form name as ‘Contact Details’ here).  

: If you are using multiple forms, the forms will appear in the same order as they are in the template.

Now you are ready to use this form in other applications with a desired name.

Update Name of the Form used in a Template

Formula field enables you to perform mathematical calculations in the email. You can create a formula which will calculate and display an output based on the email recipient’s response(s) to questions in a form.

Here are some examples of how you can use formula field to drive engagement and conversion:

Personality quizzes function by categorizing individuals into distinct personality types based on their responses to a series of questions about themselves. Depending on the choices made by the individual, they are grouped into one of the quiz results, which correspond to specific personality types. You can use these quizzes for lead generation. 

In a product recommendation quiz, a user will typically be asked a series of questions about their preferences, needs, and lifestyle. Based on their responses, the quiz will generate a list of recommended products that are tailored to their specific needs and interests. 

Creating a calculator to collect essential information

You can collect essential information by asking simple questions and calculating an output based on the responses.

a. Here is an example of a BMI calculator. It is much easier to ask for the recipient’s weight and height and calculate the BMI rather than directly asking the recipient what is your BMI.

b. Here is an example of a Home Loan EMI calculator where the recipient can enter the principal, time period and interest rate.

Creating a scored quiz or a knowledge test for assessment 

Scored quizzes are a type of quiz that assigns points or scores to each answer, allowing the person taking the quiz to receive a score or result that corresponds to their responses.

Variables are questions whose responses will be used to calculate the output of the formula.

In the above example, the following questions are variable questions-

a. Who is the Headmaster of Hogwarts when Harry arrives? 

The following input types can be used as variables in the formula-

Variable questions can span across multiple steps. For example, formula field in step 4 can use questions in step 1, 2 and 3 as variable questions.

 Add a form in the editor. Add questions which you want to use as 

Once you have added variable questions, add the formula field.

 Give a suitable label to the formula field output and click on 

After clicking on Formula, formula builder will open. Create the formula expression using variable questions, constants and operators

Once you have entered a valid formula, you will be taken to step 2 of the formula builder. Here, you need to assign numeric values to questions with predetermined answer options. The value of the variable will be the numeric value of the option selected by the user. For example, in the screenshot below, the numeric value of the variable question “Select an investment plan” can be 0.05, 0.10 or 0.15.

After assigning numeric values, click on Save Changes. Attempt the formula in preview mode and send a test email to make sure everything is working properly.

After configuring the formula, when you click on Next we will check whether your formula is valid or not. If the formula is invalid, you will see an error message.

Some of the common errors because of which the formula will be deemed invalid are-

Formula does not contain any variable question. For example 

The formula contains consecutive asterisks (

Opening parentheses is directly followed by asterisk (

Number of opening parentheses is not equal to the number of closing parentheses. For example 

Formula ends with addition operator (+),subtraction operator (-), multiplication operator (*), division operator (/), exponent operator (^) or decimal point (.). For example, 

would be invalid.
Please note that this is not an exhaustive list.

While calculating the formula result BODMAS (also known as PEMDAS) will be followed. So, precedence order will be-

Multiplication and division (from left to right)

Addition and subtraction (from left to right)

Multiplication operation will be considered by default if:

a. Two variables are not separated by an operator. 

b. Variable and constant are not separated by an operator. 

c. Variable/constant and opening parentheses are not separated by an operator (left to right). 

d. Closing parentheses and variable/constant are not separated by an operator (left to right). 

In case of multi select options, the value of the variable will be the sum of numeric values of all options selected by the user. For example, checkbox field is a multi select question.

The following numeric values are assigned to each option-

If the user selects the first three answer options then the value of the variable will be 

1. All variable questions are converted to required fields to ensure the result is always calculated. If you want to make the variable questions optional, you can do so by selecting the individual question and unchecking the required box.

2. You can use the formula result as a variable in another formula (in the same form).

3. You can use the formula result as a decision question as well as a show hide question in 

4. You can create journey branching logic based on the formula result.

5. Formula result will be recorded in submissions. You can also export the formula result as a part of export submissions.

How to create a formula in Mailmodo?

Adding Validation to a text field question can be useful if you wish to alert respondents about questions they may have missed, or they can be used to solicit a specific kind of answer from respondents. This could be a length count restriction, email validation, number range validation or  custom response validation 

For e.g. in the screenshot below, you can see different types of validation option added to the form fields.

In this article, we will walk through the step by step guide on how to add validation  to a text field in the AMP form.

You need to add a text input field in the AMP form as a prerequsitie for this guide. 

Step 1 -> Select the input field and click on the gear icon in the flyout

Step 2 -> In the general tab of the settings modal, select the type of input field and define the validation criteria for the same. Depending upon the type of field selected, relevant validation option will be provided. 

Step 2.1 -> For text field, you can either use the length of characters or a regex pattern as the validation crtieria for the text response. 

In case of specific length, you need to provide the min and max character count

In case of matching regex, you need to provide a valid regex value for pattern validation. You need to provide 

. For e.g. in the example below, we are entered the regex pattern for a LinkedIn profile URL i.e. 

^(https?:\/\/)?(www\.)?linkedin\.com\/in\/[a-zA-Z0-9\-]+\/?$
