Goal tracking is important to measure the ROI on your email marketing. It can help to assess how your journey campaigns performed over time. For instance, you may want to know how effective your journey was in onboarding a new customer through a series of emails or to nudge a customer to purchase your paid plan. 

Mailmodo allows users to define goal tracking for the journey when a user performs an event.

 Create a new journey from the journey section.

Side note - You can also add goals to your existing journeys. For that, pause your journey and edit it. There will be an option to add goal as shown below in step 2

While configuring the trigger selected, you can also set the journey goal

 Add the custom event to be tracked, timeline, and email activity. You can also add a filter for your custom event. Supported email activities are : 

Opening any email sent in the journey by the user

Clicking a link in journey campaigns by the user

You can make your user exit the journey after goal conversion by setting the exit criteria. Learn more about exit criteria here.

 After creating the journey, you can go to the next step and review all the details along with the journey goal. 

 On the Journey dashboard you can see the Goal conversion count for your journey. Once contacts enrolled in the journey meet your goal criteria the count will increase and remarks for the same can be seen in the Activity log. (See next section for how we count conversion)

1. Contact is counted as converted once it achieves the goal and exits the journey flow i.e. completed the journey. We do not include failed or aborted contacts in goal conversion, only users with status as completed is considered for the definition

=  Number of enrolled contacts who converted / Number  of enrolled contacts who completed the journey 

2. For an existing journey if a goal is set, only new contacts enrolled after goal setting will be counted for conversion i.e. goal tracking is always forward-looking.

For example, consider a Journey ABC  which you have paused and edited to add a goal.

This is how the conversion will work once it is published again.

For old enrollment  → conversion goal will not be tracked. 

For new enrolment → conversion goal will be tracked.

 → No of new enrollment converted after journey goal is set / No of new enrollment who completed journey after the goal is set.  

1. If multiple campaigns are in the journey how do we attribute goal conversion?

The goal is attributed to the campaign(s) for which a contact matches conversion criteria before expiry time. Consider a case :

 : Campaign A → wait 2 days → Campaign B

: The user should have triggered an event “Event Registered” within 4 days of sending the campaign.

Day2 - The user opens the email. Doesn’t register

Day5 - The user opens the email and registers for the event.

The goal will be at attributed to both campaigns because the event was performed within 4 days of sending the campaign.

Day6 - The user opens the email and registers for the event.

Goal will be attributed to campaign B since 4 days have expired since campaign A was launched

2. How do we attribute goal conversion in case of multiple enrollments in the journey?

In case the journey is set to multiple enrollments (Journey settings → 

There are two enrollments for the individual - Enrollment A (Old) and Enrollment B (New). 

Both the enrollments interacted with the campaigns and we received the conversion action for which we need to attribute the conversion goal. 

We will mark the conversion for the user in the following manner.

Adding a goal to your journey

This article provides you with a step-by-step guide for allowing contacts to go through the journey multiple times

You can choose the one-time enrollment option for onboarding journeys. The multi-enrollment option can be used for journeys created for cart abandonment reminders or order-placed campaigns.

A contact can be added to a journey up to a maximum of 

 Contacts entry to journey will be selected as 

 by default for all the journies. You can choose 

 for the contacts to be able to go through the journies multiple times.

Please enable the "Don't allow multiple..." checkbox above if don't want the contacts currently active in the journey to be enrolled again.

That's it. You're all set! Now the contacts will be enrolled in the journey as many times as they qualify the criteria set in the journey

 To setup a journey with Prebuilt Journeys, start by navigating to your Journeys page and click on 

 On the subsequent page, you’ll encounter an array of popular and industry-specific Prebuilt Journeys.

Easily filter them by industry using the menu on the left or simply search for the one that suits your needs.

 Clicking on a specific Prebuilt Journey will reveal a preview screen. Here, you can explore its purpose and the marketing objectives it’s tailored for. When you’re ready to put a journey into action, simply click 

 The selected journey will open with its trigger already highlighted. You’ll need to configure this trigger before proceeding to set up other nodes in the journey.

 You have the flexibility to either configure the existing trigger or change it from the right-hand panel.

We’ve gone ahead and configured few nodes for you already. But feel free to edit them by double clicking on them.

 In case you encounter any uncertainties while working with a particular journey node, don’t worry. We’ve included helpful explanatory texts within the Prebuilt Journeys to guide you through the process seamlessly.

 To further enhance your efficiency, we’ve incorporated suitable default templates for each campaign.

Hover over the template thumbnails, and you’ll find options to Preview, Edit, or Change the template to suit your branding and messaging needs.

To see a preview of the template, just click on it and it’ll open in a modal within the Journey Builder.

You can also change the template by clicking on 

 Editing templates from the Journey Builder is a breeze now. Clicking 

 opens the editor, where you can make the necessary changes. Once you’re satisfied with your modifications, click 

 to return to the journey with all your changes seamlessly integrated.

 Lastly, if you ever wish to create a completely customized journey from the ground up, you’re not limited to Prebuilt Journeys. Simply select the 

, and you’ll have a blank canvas ready for your creative touch.

In summary, while Journeys provide you with a canvas for creativity, Prebuilt Journeys deliver efficiency and convenience, helping you achieve your marketing goals at an accelerated pace.

Effortlessly Create Journeys Using Prebuilt Journeys

Before sending the journey to your recipients, it's always a good practice to test the journey with your email address or some of your teammates' email addresses. Please note that you'll also be able to test a running or paused journey.

 After you've configured the journey, click on the 

 button on the top right of the journey builder.

 Enter the email address for whom you wish to simulate the journey.

 Customize the delay as per your need in the next step. The delay value entered here will override the actual delay values configured in Wait for time period, Wait till specific time, and Wait for an event while executing the test journeys.

Change the contact personalization as per your requirement. The value you enter here will reflect in place of the $(personalization_parameter) in the recipient's email address

 and a test journey will execute as configured. 


Please check if the journey is executed as expected and make changes if necessary.

Test journey behaviour if the trigger is a Form submission trigger

Enter the test data for the form questions and a journey will get triggered if the test data meets the trigger condition configured in the journey.

If the test values entered for form submissions don't meet the criteria set in the form submission trigger, then the test journey will not be triggered.

Test journey behavior if the trigger is the Occurrence of an event.

Enter the test event data and a journey will get triggered if the test event and its properties meet the trigger condition configured in the journey.

If the test event data entered don't meet the criteria set in the occurrence of an event trigger, then the test journey will not be triggered.

View the journey path of the test contacts

and click on the email address which you want to check.

Testing an already running or paused journey

From Journey Listing Page, click on Test Journey from the overflow menu.

From Journey Dashboard as well, click on Test Journey from the overflow menu.

How to test a Journey?

How to test your journey for different trigger types?

When you create a journey, you design a series of emails that are sent to subscribers based on their actions or behaviors. Exit criteria are the rules you set to decide when a subscriber should stop receiving emails from this journey.

A contact will go through the journey until they match the exit criteria or meet the conversion goal (only if you have selected this option while setting up the exit criteria). 

Imagine you have an online store and you create an automated email journey to encourage customers to buy a new product. The journey might look like this:

 Sent immediately after someone signs up for your newsletter.

 Sent two days later, introducing the new product.

 Sent three days after the product introduction, offering a 10% discount on the new product.

 Sent five days after the discount offer, reminding them about the discount.

You have set the conversion goal as 'Placed Order', within 7 days of opening.

If the subscriber buys the new product at any point during the journey they meet the conversion goal, hence they exit the journey and stop receiving further emails.

The subscriber doesn't open or click any emails in the journey. If the subscriber doesn't engage with any emails after a certain period (e.g., 30 days), they are not interested in the content, and continuing to send emails may be counterproductive. So they get added to the list created by you and exit journey.

How do we evaluate journey exit criteria?

We check exit conditions the moment contacts enter your journey and throughout the journey, while the contacts are waiting in any block, namely Wait for specific time, Wait for time period, Wait for an event etc. 

We check whether the contacts in the journey are in/not in a list selected by you while setting the exit criteria when a contact has entered the journey or is waiting in a block. When the contact matches the conditions, they will exit the journey.

For example, you may want to send product recommendations to people who have not performed a purchase event in the past 30 days. You want people to exit the campaign when they make a purchase.

If exit criteria includes conversion goal

If you want contacts to exit the journey when they have achieved the conversion goal, you can click on the checkbox. We will check whether contacts have achieved the conversion goal criteria and if they do, they will exit the journey.

For example, if a journey notifies a contact about items they abandoned in their cart, you may want them to exit after they purchase these items. You can set people to exit the campaign if they’ve completed their purchase (the goal, in this case). They would exit after the next pause in the journey.

 on the Configure trigger screen or Review and Publish screen.

: You can select the list of contacts that will exit the journey if they are or are not a part of it. 

: Choose whether you want the contacts to exit the journey in addition to or solely when they meet the conversion goal.

You will be able to see the number of contacts that have exited at each block in the journey preview

In the individual journey preview, you can see the exact block where a contact has exited the journey.

This is shown as "Met the journey exit criteria" in the Activity logs of journey dashboard.
